I always nail my thoughts to my mast, I have been vocal that I wanted us to come out of the European Union, having said that, I did say yesterday, whatever the outcome, we should all support the majority because without cohesion, we cannot put the great into Great Britain!
I won’t deny, I am thrilled with the result, I was 10 when we entered the EU, driven by the press and with little inclusion of the man on the street.
In 1975 Harold Wilson called a referendum on Britain’s membership, I was then a teenager and able to watch what evolved. A vote given to the people, giving very little facts in order to make a decision and once more driven by the newspapers.
66 percent of the population voted to stay in, I remember my father being apoplectic with the result, saying that he had spoken to many many people and not one person had said they had voted to stay in! leaving the common man a little perplexed about the common market.
The election was not challenged and the British public settled down to work alongside Europe.
Where it all started going wrong for us, was the signing of the Single European Act, creating an internal market, a union without frontiers allowing the free movement of people and goods.
We jollied along hand in hand with our european friends, through a butter mountain, and french farmers setting fire to, poisoning and cutting the throats of truckloads of british sheep!
As a country we have put up and shut, zipped our lips and allowed more and more control of our wonderful country to dissipate.
There has been a general disconnect with the people of the UK and the EU, we have faceless MEPs and a parliament that sits in Brussels making decisions on our country, without consideration on its effects.
Through the years, we have seen industry wane, a boost of european money being injected into the smaller member countries creating wealth and employment for them to the detriment of our own.
I will not lie, immigration in recent times has fuelled the fire, and exacerbated by Angela Merkel’s poorly thought out, open door asylum policy.
Social media plays a major part in everything we do, and allows total transparency in europe’s every move, and indeed mistakes. There is always a whistleblower who will upload a video of a misdemeanour allowing it to go viral and exasperate the British public.
I will confess, I am a Conservative, a Thatcherite, she moulded my teenage years, gave women the chance to be asked more than I was, in their careers interview, what do you want to be? nurse, secretary or hairdresser? She gave us a voice to say, actually, none of the above, she gave us our voice, a modern day Pankhurst.
Women had gained the vote, but it was still a mans world, and in many cases, the woman voted as her husband/father saw fit, deferred to their superior knowledge.
I was the daughter of a docker, locked in by union membership, a Labour voter, a true red, who had to conform to the ‘everybody out’ mentality. I wasn’t best pleased about Edward Heath taking us in, but in Margaret I had and ally.
When I came home donning a blue rosette supporting Margaret’s elections my father was astonished, bit mad to be honest, but like Maggie, this lady wasn’t for turning, a new dawn in women’s opinions was evolving.
I voted for the first time in 1983, re electing Maggie for her second term, love her or hate her, she was principled and stood by her beliefs, which sadly many cabinet members lack now.
If Margaret were here now, she would be celebrating, Sir Bill Cash MP released private correspondence in which Margaret describes the EU as ‘contrary to British interests and damaging to our Parliamentary democracy’.
What went wrong? well thats simple. The learned, educated, strategic people, the MPs, the celebs, who do not live in the real world, misjudged the power of the people! Even 24 hours before the election, they still thought the man on the street didn’t have the kahunas to vote for change.
We woke up to a new beginning, an opportunity to become great again, if the government has anything in them, they will wisely invest the savings we will make from paying the EU into industry, allowing us to supply our own goods, create jobs and a strong economy.
We are a part of history, I am proud to have used my vote for out, I am certain, that my children will enjoy a more affluent life.
And what of Cornwall? it has obtained more european money than anywhere else in the UK, yet we voted OUT. What does that say? perhaps that millions of pounds have come into the county and been squandered on shonky projects, whilst those that needed it most watched on.
The UK population have spoken! whatever way you voted, we need to be a cohesive unit, in order to be great. There will be a rocky few weeks, but backbiting, and ‘I told you so’s’ will not help. We must be positive for the future generations.
I have to say I am a fan of BoJo, London voted overwhelmingly to remain, it is here that will resist change, having been the Mayor of London, he is best placed to heal wounds and encourage the city that we can do this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-eu-referendum-36620139
This is a monumental opportunity for us all, we as a generation have been cemented in the history of this wonderful country. Lets grasp the baton, create change and make this country somewhere to be proud of.
I am ready…………..
